Papers of Pauline Lyon, 1884-1994.

The papers contain personal records such as school reports, biographical writings, family information, correspondence, skits and speeches, and scrapbooks and photo albums. Also included are materials from Lyon's Red Cross experiences, notably a listing of her job responsibilities, honors and certifications, and newsletters she created and contributed to. A separate military series contains Lyon's memorabilia about the Navy in World War II and the WAVES in particular. It includes scrapbooks, newsletters, correspondence about naval and WAVES matters, photographs and recruiting posters. Of special note are two audiocassettes containing Lyon's personal reminiscences of her World War II experiences and a videocassette, produced by the Navy, of the training program at the Ottumwa Naval Air Station.

A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Pauline Lyon enlisted in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) in 1943. After training in New York City and in Cedar Falls, Iowa, she was assigned to the Ottumwa Naval Air Station in Ottumwa, Iowa from 1943 to 1946. As a Yeoman Second Class she supervised advancements in rating of enlisted personnel.
